Effects of decommissioning on the North Sea ecosystem

Two interactive PDFs showing the ecological effects of decommissioning offshore platforms and wind farms across three scenarios
The decommissioning of offshore installations – oil and gas platforms as well as wind farms – involves complex ecological trade-offs. The North Sea Foundation asked for this knowledge to be made visually accessible for policymakers and professionals.

From technical complexity to clickable insight
For both offshore platforms and offshore wind farms, an extensive interactive PDF was developed, each built around three scenarios: pre-decommissioning, partial removal, and full removal. Per scenario, the ecological effects – on reefs, biodiversity, carbon storage, and hydrodynamics – are mapped visually and made clickable for further reading. This makes a complex, technical subject accessible to a broad professional audience.
