JSVU, Juridische Studentenvereniging Utrecht (Student Law Association Utrecht), asked KSD to
develop the 2012 campaign for their event Utrechtse Bedrijvendag. Utrechtse Bedrijvendag (‘Utrecht
Company Day’) is a one-day event to introduce third and forth year law students with various law and
notary firms. Besides promoting the event in a visually powerful way, the goal was to recruit around
three-hundred law students to take part in the event.

The chosen theme for the 2012 event is ‘Neem jij het recht in eigen hand?’ (‘Do you take the law into
your own hands?’). The campaign uses the recognizable imagery of a fist, reflecting the direct question
posed to potential participants, combined with the use of contemporary photography and a unique
typographic visual style. The campaign design developed into two posters, two flyers, a catalogue,
and a website banner.

Ook in het paars (‘Also in purple’) is a handmade interior product brand of products for adults as
well as for children. The small brand approached KSD with the request of developing a coherent,
refreshing and new identity to promote its products at handmade markets as well as online.
The result is a series of business cards, flyers, price labels, thank you cards, and gift cards, each
with its own principal color reflecting the clever name of the brand.

Bits of Science is an online media platform offering a daily source of news in the fields of science,
sustainability, technology and the environment. Collaborating with various media sources,
Bits of Science is a small but committed international group of researchers and science writers.

For their series comparing population growth, Bits of Science asked KSD to design an infographic
to illustrate trends in population growth. The infographic displays the ratio of landmass to population
of Russia, the biggest country in landmass, versus Nigeria, Indonesia and Pakistan, three of the
countries most dramatically growing in population. Further, the infographic also shows the projected
decrease and increase in population growth in the year 2031 as inferred by the United Nations.
By simply comparing these two factors in a structured visual style, this dramatic and urgent problem
is made apparent. The infographic appeared in the Dutch version of the Metro newspaper as part of their
Future Daily project, in print as well as online. 

Expodium is an Utrecht-based art platform focused on short-term urban projects, collaborating
with both local and international artists. Through its projects, Expodium seeks to attract attention
to contemporary urban issues with a hands-on approach.

Expothesis is a series of art theory books, addressing contemporary issues and phenomena in art
and culture. The second in the series, Expothesis II – Waking Up from the Nightmare of Participation,
is designed as a follow-up to the first in the series. It’s simplified design reinforces the unedited, unique
contributions from the various artists.

Writer, art critic and curator Mika Hannula’s latest book, Tell it Like It Is – Contemporary
Photography and the Lure of the Real alternates between Hannula’s engaging essays and
discussions between the author and four contemporary photographers centered around
one piece of work.

The horizontal axis throughout the design mimics the give and take nature and balance
between the participants and the author in the discussions. It also depicts the complementary
partnership between Hannula’s abstract theoretical and at times philosophical essays and
the conversations about the practices of contemporary photographers. The contrasting
typography and use of color clearly differentiates the two parts of the book, easing the legibility

While following the Master’s program at the Utrecht Graduate School of Visual Art and Design (maHKU),
Kate was asked to develop a design for two issues of the school’s biannual journal of artistic research,
published for an audience of both art professionals and art students.  A year later she was re-commissioned
to design the latest two issues.

The requirements were to maintain the basic design elements of the previous issues, namely black and white,
an A4-format, so one could print it out at home, and a one text-column layout, leaving room for readers to
write comments and notes in the margins. The typographic structure of the design enables this idea that readers
would interact with the text, and utilize the margins as their own notebook, referencing the text when necessary.

A human resources institute in the Netherlands which develops online aptitude tests for
employees of large multinational corporations commissioned an interactive online infographic
tool displaying the user’s test results. Aptitude tests utilize structured systematic methods
of evaluating how people perform on tasks or react to different situations in the workplace.

The design of this series of infographics is based on the idea that every user creates his/her own
universe of personal test results, exhibiting his/her strengths and weaknesses in a visual and com-
prehensive way. The meaningful hierarchical structure uses a clear visual language with which to

CBK Dordrecht (Centrum Beeldende Kunst Dordrecht) is a platform for contemporary art
and design in Dordrecht, the Netherlands. CBK Dordrecht regularly offers exhibitions,
education programs and special activities supporting the local art and design culture in and
around the Netherlands.

The two print advertisements in the Mr. Motley magazine for two separate exhibitions reinforce
CBK Dordrecht’s continuing interest and passion in contemporary art and design. The multi-layered
illustrations combined with raw typography depict CBK Dordrecht’s focus of creating discussion

One of the oldest and largest luxurious department stores in the Netherlands, de Bijenkorf
is a leader in the world of brands and fashion. De Bijenkorf publishes a monthly magazine
containing various on-location photo shoots and short articles surrounding their latest
events, tips and products.

A monthly theme is the basis for the magazine and the main photo shoot. This theme is carried
out throughout the design in terms of layout and typography. This gives the reader a surprising
and refreshing view on fashion yet supports de Bijenkorf’s longtime identity as leader of fashion
and luxurious brands in the Netherlands. Designed at Solar Initiative.

One of the first and largest luxurious department stores in the Netherlands, de Bijenkorf
is a leader in the world of brands and fashion. Besides publishing a monthly magazine,
de Bijenkorf developed a one-time 140 year anniversary publication.

Inspirat140n contains full-length articles, interviews and photo shoots with the leading
product and fashion designers, trend-watchers, photographers, writers, public figures and
illustrators in the Netherlands. The design pushes the boundaries of de Bijenkorf brand yet
reinforces it’s identity and position as leader in fashion and brands. This while at the same
time discussing new and exciting contemporary issues in the fields of art and culture in the

newStyle is a Dutch fashion trade magazine, highlighting the most recent trends and develop-
ments in the international and national fashion world. This new magazine, a biannual two-part
publication (newStyle man and newStyle woman) is published for fashion retailers in the
Netherlands, as well as brands, importers, agents and other fashion professionals.

The informative yet inspiring nature of the magazine is reflected in its refined typography and
sometimes impromptu layout. Contemporary photography and a clear editorial structure are
used to narrate the cutting-edge content, including reports covering the newest retail boutiques,
material use, color trends and up-and-coming designers. Designed at Solar Initiative.

The book Charting Nationality presents the issue and history of nationalism through a
theoretical essay and a series of infographic charts. The essay focuses on the contemporary
and historical efforts of both immigrated and majority cultures to sustain their national identity,
among the influence of globalization, and the role of new media therein.

The infographics visualize a new kind of data collected in an innovative and attractive method
on a scale of local to global within three realms of preferences, namely daily, general and virtual.
The visual charts further separate the data into three kinds of people with specific relationships
with their home countries; namely native citizens, immigrants and expatriates. Through this kind
of data visualization one can extract the important differences and surprising circumstances of modern
nationalism, both across types of people and realms of preferences.

The user-generated interactive website New National Archives is a new method to view and
chart the relevant, unexplored issue of modern nationalism in a time of global migration and
blurred political and cultural borders. Disregarding outdated stereotypes of modern countries
and the traditional method of a select few accumulating a national archive, this website digs
deeper to find how real people view, visualize and define their national culture today.

Searching for specific keywords, New National Archives automatically generates its images from
Flickr and its text from Twitter, two of the largest virtual social phenomena of today, with a combined
user total of tens of millions worldwide. Further, it’s interactivity gives the user a chance to add his/her
voice by choosing keywords as well as saving images and text to the archive, ultimately creating real,
flexible and ever-changing national identities.
